Suspension

The suspension system absorbs bumps, vibrations, and road irregularities, isolating the cabin from harsh impacts and providing a comfortable ride. It also maintains tyre contact with the road for optimal handling and control.

Components:

  • Springs: Coil springs or leaf springs absorb shock and support the vehicle’s weight.
  • Shock absorbers/dampers: Control spring rebound and prevent excessive bouncing.
  • Struts: Combine spring and shock absorber functions in a single unit (common in modern cars).
  • Control arms: Connect suspension components and allow for steering and suspension movement.
  • Bushings: Rubber or metal components that absorb vibrations and allow for controlled movement.
  • Sway bars: Reduce body roll during cornering, improving handling and stability.

Common issues and maintenance:

Suspension: Worn shocks, broken springs, worn bushings, loose control arms can cause noises, vibrations, uneven tyre wear, and poor handling.

Maintenance: Regular inspections, alignment checks, and replacing worn components are crucial.

Steering

The steering system allows you to control the direction of your car. It translates your steering wheel movements into turning the wheels.

Components:

  • Steering wheel: Initiates your desired turning direction.
  • Steering column: Connects the steering wheel to the steering gear.
  • Steering gear: Converts steering wheel rotation into horizontal movement for the wheels (e.g., rack and pinion, power steering).
  • Tie rods: Connect the steering gear to the wheels, transferring turning motion.
  • Ball joints: Allow for smooth movement between steering components.
