Michelin - Car-Tech

Michelin is one of the largest tyre manufacturers in the world; it is a household name in the manufacture of premium quality tyres for cars, vans and 4×4 tyres, as well as having roots in motorsport and biking to name just a few areas of expertise.

Who are Michelin?

The Michelin tyre philosophy is built upon three main factors – safety, longevity and fuel efficiency to produce tyres which meet the needs of the most demanding drivers. This is demonstrated by the 4,000 people dedicated to research and development and the largest research and development budget in the tyre sector, making Michelin one of the top tyre brands in the world today.

Michelin was founded in 1889 by Edouard Michelin and Andre Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand. The brothers initially ran a rubber factory when a cyclist arrived at the factory wanting a repair. Over the next two years, the brothers worked meticulously and patented the first removable pneumatic tyre in 1891. The Michelin Tyres company was established in 1905, with over fifty employees.

In the early 1990s, Edouard Michelin and his brother Andre Michelin created the Michelin Guide for motorists, with the aim of increasing the demand for car tyres. As well as information on tyre maintenance, it also included hotels and restaurants. In 1926, the Michelin Guide began to award stars to restaurants that they felt were ‘fine dining’. Since the introduction of Michelin Stars back in 1926, nowadays they are still a key indicator used to determine restaurant quality. In 1946, Michelin developed the first commercialised ‘radial tyre’ which was a key in them becoming one of the largest and most respected tyre manufacturers in the world.

Michelin, as a premium tyre manufacturer, has also delved into a number of different motorsports. Michelin is the official MotoGP tyre supplier, recently signing a contract until the end of the 2023 season. From 1977 to 2006, Michelin tyres were used in Formula One. Michelin has also provided tyres in the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well the European Le Mans Series. In the World Rallying Championship, Michelin has previously been the official tyre supplier to a number of the most successful rallying teams such as Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Audi.

Michelin is a well-renowned and respected tyre manufacturer that continually invests in research and development to ensure they create the best premium tyres within the UK tyre market.
